Many routines within XFS have to allocate ondisk space
This is all done through xfs_bmapi
access extent map for reading
setup delayed allocation
perform actual allocation
convert unwritten extents to written extents
If you trace calls through XFS xfs_bmapi is the centre of XFS
In write mode you are usually in a transaction
